Growth habit 10 m usually, but may reach 30 m; trunk to 1,5 m in diameter;
Leaves 10-16 x 3.5-6 cm; oval to oblong-elliptic; leathery; apex acute to caudate; base broadly cuneate to rounded; margin toothed at apical 1/2 (sometimes to the base); both sides at first orangish tomentose, becoming hairless; concolorous, but slightly yellowish beneath; midrib raised adaxially; 13-22 vein pairs branched near margin; tertiary veins evident abaxially; petiole thin, glabrescent, 1-3 cm long;
Flowers April;  4 styles;
Fruits acorn 1.4-1.6 cm long, 2-2.6 cm in diameter, flattened; densely pale brown tomentose; apex depressed, with a short, thick mucro; enclosed 9/10 by cup; cup 1.5-2 cm high, 3 cm in diameter, 2 mm thick, with 8-12 remotely toothed, finely pubescent concentric rings ; scar flat, 2 cm wide; maturing in 1 year;

bark grey, rough; twigs sulcate, densely stellate hairs tomentose when young, becoming hairless, with raised, small, whitish lenticels;
