Leaves 8-18 cm x 4-11; dediduous; subcoriaceous; obovate; apex obtuse; base round or subcordate; margin coarsely sinuate-crenate, with ovate, mucronate teeth; adaxially green with simple and stellate, appressed, deciduous trichomes; abaxially somewhat glaucous, with mainly simple hairs, less abundant stellate ones, all persistent; midrib prominent beneath; 9-13 veins pairs, parallel. petiole stout, tomentose, 0.5-1.2 cm long;
Flowers pistillate catkins at axil of the leaves at the top of the twig, erect; rachis straight, stout, yellowish pubescent, 0.5-1.8 cm long; female flower globose, sessile, 1to 3 together at the end of the rachis;

-- For Tomitaro Makino, it is a possible hybrid between Q. dentata and Q. serrata, both species growing in the same place.
For other Authors it is a hybrid between Q. acuta and Q. sessilifolia, which is clearly not obvious, as both species are Cyclobalanopsis, hence are persistent.

-- For today's Authors (International Oak Society) it is a hybrid between Q. dentata and Q. acutissima
