Range China (Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Yunnan), Laos, North Vietnam, Myanmar; from 500 to 1500 m;
Growth habit 15-25 m; trunk reaching 0.6 m in diameter; 
Leaves 14-26 x 4-8 cm; elliptic or oblong; apex pointed; both sides glabrous; base cuneate; leathery; withish beneath; margin entire or remotely denticulate near apex; 10-12 vein pairs; petiole 2-6 cm, at first tomentose;
Flowers male inflorescence 10-15 cm, tomentose; female inflorescence tomentose, solitary; flowers in March-April; 4-8 long styles (to 4 mm), recurved;
Fruits acorn 3-3.5 cm, densely tomentose; enclosed 4/5 by cup; cup bell-shaped, hairy, very thick (to 6 mm), with 10-13 concentric rings; basal scar 1.6 cm in diametre ;  maturing in 2 years, in October-December;
