Leaves 6-14 x 2-5 cm; leathery; oblong, elliptic or lanceolate; apex acuminate; base cuneate, usually asymmetrical; margin plane, remotely denticulate at apical 1/2; brownish green, glabrous, shiny above; abaxially with greyish brown stellate tomentum, late-glabrescent; 7-12 pairs of secondary veins raised below, forming an angle of 60-70° with the midrib; petiole 1-3 cm long, often flat above, glabrescent;
Flowers male catkins 1.5-3 mm long, pubescent; male flowers pubescent, with 3-4 lobes and 4-5 stamens; pistillate inflorescences 1-2 cm, densely hairy, with 3-4 flowers; female flowers with 3-4 recurved styles;
Fruits acorn 2.5-3 cm, glabrous, shiny brown, conical or cylindrical, with apex depressed and base truncate; enclosed 1/4 by cup; silky cup with thick wall, 4-7 denticulate rings;  maturing between September to April;

Bark, twigs and
buds

greyish brown, thick bark; twigs reddish pubescent at first, glabrescent, with numerous lenticels; terminal bud ovoid or subglobose, tomentose, 3-5 mm across; stipules linear, acute, pubescent, 5-7 mm long;
Hardiness zone, habitat not  hardy; wet tropical forests, on basic soils;
