Leaves

9-17 x 3.5-5.5 cm; narrowly elliptic or oboval; leathery; apex obtuse, base often cordate and asymmetrical; margins entire, often wavy, sometimes toothed near apex; dark green; glabrous on both surfaces, except tufts of hairs in the axils of veins underneath; 10-16 vein pairs, impressed adaxially, sunken beneath; petiole hairy 5-12 mm long;

Flowers

in February and September; male inflorescences yellowish, 4-16 cm; female 4-6 cm, bearing 2-6 flowers;

Fruit

acorn 1.5-2 cm, obtuse, coffee-coloured, most often solitary or 2-3 together, set on a 1.5-3 cm stalk; enclosed 1/4 to 1/3 in the cup; cup hemispherical, with narrow, ciliate, apically free scales; maturing in 1 year in June-July and in October.

Bark, twigs and buds

bark exfoliating into grey, vertical plates 3-4 cm thick and 12-15 cm wide; twigs tomentose but glabrescent, strongly striated, becoming whitish with age; lenticels prominent; buds ovoid, 4-6 cm long, 2-3 cm wide;

not hardy; slow-growing; prefers acidic, loamy soils.
